Anxiety can feel overwhelming at times, but by the end of this article, you’ll have the tools to take control of your life and feel better
Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, are powerful tools that combine acupressure with psychological principles to deal with anxiety and fears. It consists of tapping on certain acupressure points in your body while focusing on your anxiety and repeating.
Here are four EFT tapping techniques to regain peace of mind!
1. Basic Recipe: Classic Tapping Sequence
Identify your fear or anxiety. Tap on the side of your hand (the Karate Chop point) as you say, “Even though I have some anxiety about __________, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
Now, tap in sequence on each of the following points, focusing on your anxiety:
- Top of the head,
- Eyebrow,
- Side of the eye,
- Under the eye,
- Under the nose,
- Chin,
- Collarbone,
- Arm.
Keep repeating this pattern until you feel a reduction in intensity
2. Tapping for Particular Fears
EFT can also be used to resolve specific fears, such as public speaking, fear of flying, or social situations.
Technique: Bring to mind the particular fear that you would like to treat. State your fear while using the Basic Recipe, “Even though I have a fear of [specific fear], I deeply and completely accept myself.” Continue tapping while imagining what scenario evokes your fear, and note how your levels of anxiety shift.
3. Tapping for Generalized Anxiety
Tapping is a tool for calming the nervous system and can be very effective for those people who experience anxiety but are unaware of what is causing the feeling.
Method: Rate your anxiety on a scale of 0 to 10. Run the Basic Recipe with the Setup Statement, “Even though I feel anxious, I deeply and completely accept myself.” Run through the sequence, lowering the intensity of your anxiety a little with each round.
4. Tapping for Anxiety Related Physical Symptoms
Anxiety can also show itself with physical symptoms such as tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, or discomfort in the stomach. In these cases, EFT is applied to the physical symptom.
Technique: Bring to mind the physical symptom you are experiencing. Use the Basic Recipe, saying, “Even though I feel [physical symptom], I deeply and completely accept myself.” Now tap through the points, drawing attention to your body response. Adjust the wording of your statements if you have to as you continue until relief is felt.
Conclusion
EFT tapping is one of the best, most effective tools for dealing with anxiety and beating fears. If practised regularly, these four techniques will help you minimise such impacts on your life and remain calm and in control.
